Foothills Music Academy - To Catch a Fish!

Foothills Music Academy is a unique place to learn.

We use the analogy of learning to fish when describing Foothills Academy's approach to teaching.

The traditional teacher instructs the student by having them mimic or write in the note-names on the music. The student then proceeds to "memorize" and play by rote a beautiful piece of music, but only as the teacher has taught it. They are insecure in attempting to play a piece of music they have not seen before, create their own music or arrange a piece and make it uniquely their own. Much like receiving a beautiful fish but without the knowledge of where to find a good fishing hole or how to care and feed eventually it dies.

We like to teach our students how to fish, meaning they understand the logic as well as artistry behind the music and are not afraid to try new fishing holes! Not all students excel in reading music or following the theory rules, but they can all excel at creating their own music. Sometimes the fish is not the prettiest, nor the fastest, but it is the healthiest and will continue to survive years after the student has caught it.

Our goal is that each of our students will pass on the knowledge of how to fish...

Foothills Music Academy Youth Chamber Orchestra!

What is a chamber orchestra?

During the Middle-Ages, Baroque and Classical periods, friends would gather and play their favorite musical works in either their private homes or "chambers" of their employers.

( very much like "Guitar Hero" today in our bonus rooms). Thus it is often referred to as "music of friends"

Unlike school orchestra, or practicing alone in one's bedroom, chamber group encourages close friendships as well as leadership. Chamber music generally consists of 2 up to 8 musicians on a piece of music, which allows for great flexibility and fun as each musician is able to take pride in being a significant contributor to the final sound. There will also be opportunities for all the musicians to join together as one large musical family.

Throughout the year we will have numerous opportunities to play; many will be intimate settings. I have already lined-up an opportunity for the Holiday season at a local art gallery!

Story Behind Foothills Music Chamber Orchestra

In the spring of 2009 I had the opportunity to play at the Riverside Baptist Church in Harlem, NY. During my lunch break, I wandered down the hill and heard music coming from an upstair window. The name on the building: "Manhattan School of Music". I watched as young musicians walked in and out with their parents, as well as older musicians joining up with friends on the sidewalk with their instruments and music books. At one distinct moment, through an open window, I heard a teacher and student discussing a musical passage and then listened as they put it into practice playing a beautiful duet.

At that moment I knew I wanted to have a place where students of all levels, from many cities, could come together and make "music of friends".

New Friends at Piano Camp...

Another great camp! Completely different than strings, since we wrote much of our own music!

Composers hard at work on..."WWIII"

We each wrote 8 bars of music in the key of A minor (started in key of C major, but everyone naturally converted to A minor without knowing, just following their ear) in 4/4 time. We combined everyone's part in different orders, and discussed how music follows a form: Example: A B A B1 C B2 C A. Each 8 bars was different, emphasizing octave jumps, different rhythm combinations and of course, unique sounds on the keyboard.

After the piece was put together, they all decided it sounded like WWIII for each section seemed to come from a different country, and of course Dan wrote his sounding like a helicopter!

We had just discussed Scott Joplin and how he is recorded on player piano rolls from 1917.

He was not considered a good pianist, but a pioneer in composing. We also did a little primitive Karaoke...the words are printed on the old rolls. Everyone got into it!

Many pianists are musical and play more than one instrument.

We had a bassoon and oboe join in on our ensemble pieces.

WELCOME!

The second movement has started and it is wonderful!

We have our own entrance and relaxing front porch and sitting area for students.

Now when you come in to the studio, you will be greeted by a counter, which allows for privacy for me and my students as well as an organized area for scheduling.

Lots more Room...

We now have a separate work area along with rehearsal rooms.

Although there are lots of new things (like a player piano!), the old beloved things are still here...the organ

... and of course

your wonderful drawings and notes are back on the wall.

New Friends at Orchestra Camp...

We all arrived as individual musicians, and left as a group of friends who share the love of creating music.

Putting on our final day concert for the parents.

We played music from Handel, Scott Joplin, American Square Dance tunes, French folk songs, and Welsh circle dances.

Playing games, where everyone helps each other.

This teaches teamwork...which definitely is an orchestra!

The one who finishes first always loses in a group of musicians.

If someone is struggling, we all help, for the group is only as strong as its weakest player.

Mike shared about his baritone saxaphone, to show what other instruments make up a Symphony...we wrote a part for him to join in.

We had been listening to Henry Mancini music and picking out the different instruments...

Pink Panther features the saxaphone!!

We also celebrated birthdays!

Brooke played Happy Birthday on her violin as we sang.

The enthusiasm was high, and at the end of the day nobody wanted to pack their instruments to go home - including Emmy and me; especially not at the end of the week!

So, we are going to be starting a Chamber Orchestra in the fall to stay together!!!!

Keep those bows rosined and strings tuned...

Thanks to our ever-growing musical family, our studio is a bit cramped!

July 1 we will be moving from our current 400 sq ft studio into a fabulous 1400 sq ft studio - just downstairs!

In the new studio will have rehearsal rooms as well as a stage. Now we can create an orchestra as well as perform our piano and vocal pieces in an intimate environment.

Emmy Hoech, my colleague and string instructor from the Northshore School District is joining the faculty. I am thrilled! Not only does she work with children all day, but she has her own, which makes her not only fun, but very patient and understanding. And, she loves music!!

I'll keep you posted as we get closer. Be sure and watch for upcoming camps!!

Young Artist Spotlight

The first Sunday of every month is Young Artist Spotlight. Musicians 18 and under can share their talent from 1:00 to 3:00. This is not just for musical groups, but classical and vocal artists as well. It is a great venue to come and experience a "gig".

It is held at Match Wine and Coffee Bar, 15705 Main St - Duvall Plaza, the same building shared with Foothills Music Academy. The atmosphere is family oriented with great food and coffee. The musicians set-up in front of the fireplace and perform in a very intimate, jazz setting.

Foothills Music provides keyboard, amp, microphone and music stands, all at no cost.

Reservations are required, but easy! Just email or phone me at Foothillsacademy@yahoo.com and let me know what instrument and how much time you would like. This way you are assured a performance time. If you require an accompanist, let me know. I'm happy to accompany for no fee since I want to make this a wonderful, professional opportunity. Especially vocalists, if you have never sung using a professional accompanist, you will experience true artist creativity and expression...plus its fun!!!

A sample of musicians who have performed in the past are: Woodinville High School Sophomore Jazz Ensembles, Junior High pianists, vocalists, cellists, Elementary pianists, High School clarinetists and bassoonists.

Holiday Recital...job well done!

Amazing what some practice does!!!

Since October, we have been practicing our Christmas/Holiday/Chanukah/Classical/Ragtime/Jazz/Improvisational music as well as ensemble groups. What a variety of music...even french horn and bassoon!!

After the recital, I found that most of the students jumped ahead in their progress...some even 2 levels! It is all about playing. I believe it does not matter what you play, as long as you play and love it...and who doesn't love Holiday music. So, we had lots of practice, including many group rehearsals for our special ensemble pieces.

Ensemble playing is not at all like solo work. You do not have the luxury to stop, slow down, speed up, or even play louder than a peer. Although I do not teach group lessons, at recital time I do put together ensembles where each student plays a different part so that they learn the importance of being prepared, listening, following a leader as well as being a good leader for the group is only as good as the least experienced/prepared musician. This is an optional performance for the students, but I have yet to find anyone who doesn't participate. In fact, they are already planning which part they want next year...and some have already seen the new ensemble music and are excited!

Fall off to a huge start!

Playing for fun with friends in the studio!

What an exciting time fall is. New school clothes, new schedules, new teachers...and new instruments! This year my colleague and I are teaching and conducting nearly 110 elementary string students in our Northshore school district orchestra. We have 60 in our beginning program alone...largest ever! What is especially wonderful for me is I get many of these students twice! Not only do I teach them strings at school, but many come to me for private piano, voice, guitar or string instruction. I remember taking both violin and piano as an elementary student. It was my favorite part of being a kid!

Many of my students are now young adults. I remember when they were just being introduced to the joy of music! It thrills me that they have kept that love. I have students who I am now teaching to conduct...it is coming full circle!

We never know what exciting, new things fall will bring!

Washington Music Educators Association Award!

Performing at the Northshore Performing Arts Center

Only 35 musical groups from around the state are invited to play at the Washington Music Educators Association convention. This year only 1 elementary orchestra was chosen...and it is my orchestra out of Northshore! This September my colleague and I were notified that we are invited to play at the President's day convention to be held in the Meydenbauer center ballroom in Bellevue. What an honor. This is the first time an elementary orchestra has been chosen. We now have lots of work to do to prepare, but it is a lot of fun!

Valentine's Day playing the piano! What better love?

One just never knows where a piano will lead you...this time to Yakima, Wa for the WMEA Conference.

Cascade High School's Select Women's Ensemble, Vivace, submitted the recording from their performance in Manhattan, NY, last year. I had the priviledge of playing the piano for this amazing women's vocal group on that recording, and was so proud of them when they were accepted from submittals from across Washington State to perform at the Washington Music Educators Association Conference in Yakima, Wa to represent the best of Washington State Music Ensembles.

Under the directorship of Ms. Laurie Capello, who was awarded Outstanding Washington Music Educator of the year for her region, the girls performed beautifully. They have been asked to submit a recording of this performance to submit for National Music Educator Conference, to be held in Chicago...

Theory can be fun!

Who said theory is a bore?

I think of theory as the science behind the music, and when we learn science we often do experiments and have fun "blowing" things up as an alternative form of learning.

I believe we can do the same thing with "music science", but of course, we can't be blowing things up in the studio! Therefore, we play many different types of games from listening quietly in the studio to marching loudly down the hallway.

The Candy Corn Game

This helps a student recognize the notes in 3 different ways...staff, alphabet and keyboard.

The General Music Board Game

This game the students are asked to recognize and define musical terms, musical genres, musical instruments as well as classical to contemporary composers.

Because I do not see music as a competition or a win/lose environment, there are no winners or losers in any of our games. Consequently, the students are so eager to share their knowledge and attempt at answering or helping their fellow game-player, that everyone enjoys the creative and supportive environment!

At times I overlap students so that they realize that music is not always created in a vacuum and is very fun to share! Playing a drum is a lot more fun when someone else is beating out a complimentary or competing rhythm, and without realizing it they learn to correctly notate rhythm.

Often the students are the creators of the games...they are now working on how to incorporate the overhead projector into a game. I already have received some great ideas!

Halloween Fun!

A creepy, fun musical time was had by all on Halloween.

The old 1920 reed organ got a chance to blow off its dust and blow through its bellows!

Throughout the building one heard the Phantom of the Opera, Bach's Toccata in D and many other "creepy" original compositions, as our students all joined in playing and singing.

There was always someone "cranking" the organ, handing out candy and playing the organ!

All amongst cobwebs and plastic spiders!

We had sing-a-longs for all ages!

In total, we had nearly 900 "trick-or-treaters" come to our studio and experience music!

A Look Within the Studio...

WELCOME!

When I took piano, my lessons were given on a 9-foot Steinway at our church. I remember how my simple pieces sounded so grand! At home I practiced on a small spinet and looked forward every week to playing on that majestic piano.

Because of that experience, I wanted to create a space that students could bring their much practiced pieces and hear them in all their glory. I do not travel to homes, for unlike a violinist, oboeist...even accordionist, pianists do not have the luxury of taking their instrument with them, so a good pianist must be able to adjust to each piano which is as unique as an individual.

I have played on fine, hand-crafted instruments as well as broken-down, out-of-tune pianos at the missions in Seattle...no matter which piano, I love to play!

1920 Estey Reed Organ

I played church organ in high school and college, playing for many weddings and church services. This particular organ is a 1920 Estey Reed Organ from a church in California. It is a nice change of pace to hear what a Bach piece sounds like when played on the organ. After all, Bach was an organist!

Playing organ involves very different fingering techniques than conventional piano...there is always one or more fingers or a foot holding a key at all times.

Remember Shakey's Pizza? I grew up going to Shakey's and listening to their Dixieland bands along with the magical piano that played by itself.

Well, I have a magical piano...and it plays all types of music. The students have the opportunity to listen to everything from Gershwin playing his own Rhapsody in Blue, Joplin playing The Entertainer and even Little Mermaid or Alladin songs. Yes, they make new rolls for these incredible machines.

Sitting/Waiting Area

Although parents and siblings are not encouraged to stay during lessons, I have an area that students can sit as they wait for their lesson.

The studio is located across the parking lot from a used bookstore, public library, ice cream parlor, downstairs from Match restaurant, and up the hill from the Snoqualmie river sandy beach, so there is much to do while your child enjoys their lesson.

Back from the Big Apple with Gold!!!

Me and Lady Liberty!

Both pretty tired!!

There has not been a lot of activity at the academy for the last month for I was busy helping Cascade High School prepare for their choral competition in Manhattan, NY. Nearly every day for 2 weeks I drove to Everett and worked with the Choral Conductor as she prepared her 3 vocal groups for National Competition.

After much work, I am happy to report that they came away with Golds in all 3 of their categories.

We all had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at Riverside Baptist Church in Harlem, where Martin Luther King preached

We also had the opportunity to meet and listen to Westpoint.

WOW is all I can say!

Best way to end a day is at the largest Hershey and M&M Store!

Now I am working with Timbercrest Junior High in Woodinville to participate in a similar National Competition here in Seattle, at Tillicum Village.

It still amazes me all the opportunities my piano has afforded me...never thought that while practicing all those silly songs and drills!

As I have always believed, my piano is my best friend, and I am glad it took me to the Big Apple for Gold!

A "sweet honey of an evening"...

We all had a "honey" of an evening as we learned about bee keeping from Kelly Louvier.

By the end of the evening, we were all "sweet" on these little critters, and ready to have our own hives. Did you know that the Queen is so smart that she knows when her colony is deficient in a certain area...say, architecture (the building and maintaining of the hive) so she will lay eggs that will develop into those particular worker bees. She determines which eggs will be female and male...the workers are always female. The male is simply a "drone" and his sole job is to mate with the Queen (she mates with something like 20,000 boys!). As soon as the weather turns and the colony now must rely on the honey for their winter food, they kick out the drones (males) to starve.

Kelly talked about how insecticides and "round up" have affected her colonies.

Do you know 2 brothers pumpkins in Carnation? That is one of the places where she keeps her bees...she gets pumpkins in trade for pollinating the pumpkin squash blossoms. She has local orchards and flower farms that hire her bees.

It was so fascinating and fun, that Kelly and I are going to have several of these "busy as bees" nights. She is going to show us how she extracts the honey from the hive!

You will be introduced to different fibers

as well as discussing various American Artists

who have changed the world's view of it...from a craft to an art.

This class is open to all ages (just no toddlers/infants please).

I feel that art is most inspiring when taught multi-generationally,

for it encourages us to see art through others' eyes...

no matter how young or old.

The class is limited, so please sign up early.

On Friday, February 13th from 7:00 - 9:30, you are invited to special pre-Valentine's Day

event just for ladies. We will meet Kelly Louvier, a local Snoqualmie Valley honey bee farmer, who will come and share her personal "life of bees" story as well as share honey samples.

As we attend "honey class", we will be busy as bees making our own needle felted bees.

Fun, Easy and Self-Indulging!

Now that the Wild and Wintery days of December and January are hopefully behind us, why not take a moment and relax and share those adventures

with other ladies over chocolate!

This month we will be felting over our Foothills Farm all-natural goatmilk soap.

You will choose the colors of your merino and silk, blend by carding, and "felt" over the soaps of your choice.

We have so many flavors to choose from: Lilac, Plumeria, Orange, Chai, Violet, Spearmint, Lavender, Vanilla, Blackberry...Apple...Persimmon...and many more!

They are so pretty alone you may not want to cover them!

New Year time for piano?

As the New Year approaches and the Christmas and Holiday decorations are tucked safely away for another year, how about learning something new or brushing up on something old...

with the piano.

As my teaching schedule is quickly filling with after school students and Holiday retail season has passed, I am now opening up my day time schedule.

Adults are very rewarding to teach, especially since I began cello lessons as an adult and soon will be starting harp, so I know the thrill and agony that learning something new as an older and wiser soul brings.

The hands aren't as limber, the brain not as fast and the eyes now need bifocals...

but the heart's joy of discovery never wains.

So, if you have ever wanted to play the piano, why not start now?

Promise, I won't make you learn all your scales...maybe not even a single one...

unless you want to, of course!

Chicks, Chocolate and Santa!

Santa braved the rain and wind to make for a special evening

As Billy Jo "Santa" busily carved his beautiful Santa's, us chicks were carving with our

felting needles and wool.

And, of course, we kept fueled by chocolate.

Due to the inclement weather, several roads were closed and 3 of our ladies could not attend. They were missed...but the work continued!

We look forward to the next Chicks 'N Chocolate in January.

Hopefully this time we will not have rain, wind and snow!

on a Waterford cake pedestal

Lots of chocolate and fiber for everyone!

The concensus was unanimous: the olive oil/salt dark chocolate truffle was the winner!

Great Group of Ladies all Spindling!

I carefully laid out the fiber, placed the spindles in a crystal vase and arranged samples of my early work using hand spun yarn all in anticipation of having a great class filled with great ladies.

And what a great time we had...ladies and children of all ages with all levels of experience.

We even had a spinning wheel!

I hosted with tea and freshly made pumpkin cookies, and before we knew it the 3 hours had swiftly passed. I am looking forward to my next class as well as seeing many of these ladies and their children again!

Breast Cancer Awareness Activity...

Foothills Academy volunteered the Children's Activity at the Cottage Lake Safeway's breast cancer awareness craft/rummage sale.

I am sure that we have all had our lives touched in some way by this terrible disease. If not ourselves, we know of someone who has battled this illness. For me, it is my sister.

This kind young man, Carson, volunteered his afternoon to instruct the children on how to make felted soap. Those of you who have seen me around town, know that this is my activity of choice. All involved, children and adults, enjoy this fun and tactile project.

We will be volunteering again at the upcoming prostate cancer benefit as well, so bring those kids down to make some felted soap. I'll let you know when that date has been chosen.

Such a Grand Opening...!

All hands were on deck...Dan swept the front, the girls arrainged the flowers and cookies, and I waited until the last minute to do anything, of course, being a bit overwhelmed!

I will upload more pictures once I receive some. I was so busy being the "hostess" that I was unable to be the photographer as well, so I had several friends who graciously stepped in to that role and will send me their pictures.

Gone are the turquoise and peach walls, painted dog paws, faux brick linoleum and pounds and pounds of old dog hair! After 2 coats of Kilz and 2 coats of paint, we finally created an inviting entrance. On the counter is my scrap book as well as samples of projects that we have done at the academy.

As soon as you enter the store, you will smell the lovely aromatherapy of our hand-poured goat-milk soaps. So many flavors to choose from...ginger lime, chai tea, orange spice, plumeria, lavender, fresh mint...and many more. You can purchase them alone wrapped in their own organza bag, or paired with a hand-crocheted spa cloth

(that I make in the evenings curled up on the couch).

I nearly sold out of the spa cloth/soap. The basin was filled to the rim! I better get working!

So many flavors of soap, I would be hard-pressed to choose my favorite...but I do tend to choose Plumeria or Mint! (Orange Spice and Chai Tea now with fall is nice as well)

Up the step you are greeted with a little bit of something for everyone. There are children books, felting kits, hats, purses, scarves and interesting fashion forward designs

Thanks to my husband, we also have something for the men. Goat-milk soap shaving mugs with boar bristle foaming brushes and nail brushes. Dan suggested we make these, for unbeknownst to me, he had been using our natural soaps for quite a while instead of shaving cream.

I had several requests for unscented soaps for the men and fragrance sensitive, so I currently have unscented soap curing in time for the holidays. Unlike simple oil soaps, goat-milk soap takes 3 month to cure and set.

My family thinks I must be tone-deaf for I love playing our old gramaphone, built in 1925.

I have quite a variety of old 78's from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata to The Lennon Sisters and Dean Martin. I especially like to play it for my students that are addicted to their ipods...you may walk in and hear it playing, and I won't be offended if you ask me to turn it off!

I am still developing store hours, for I must juggle it around my music teaching. I don't want anyone to be frusterated if they come by and I am closed, so currently I know the store is open Fri 10-3, Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 11-5. I am down there all the time, so chances are you will catch me anyhow.

Hard to believe we started with this in June!

Come see the transformation !

Hard to believe that just 3 months ago my husband and I stood in front of this building and dreamt about opening a music/textile academy and art boutique.

Well, it has happened, and we are excited to have you join us in officially opening our door!

For the last few months, I have been busy doing local art shows as well as creating an environment that reflected my love of textiles and my piano. Now I want to share it with you.

The piano has always been an integral part of my life, my first love so to speak, and it has brought me many wonderful people and fellow "instruments" into my life that normally our paths would never have had reason to cross. This is why I am having a program showcasing the piano in its most humble role, that of a support and relationship instrument/builder.

You will hear my piano and I playing alongside an oboe, bassoon, trumpet, violin, singer and fellow pianist...my piano teacher from 25 years ago. Mrs. Linda Allen, Master of Music, will be alongside me on the piano bench welcoming my new adventure as we play Joplin, Gershwin and Brahms duets! (yes, I am very nervous...once a student always a student!)

Jim Queen, our local chocolatier who owns Chocolate Serenade, will have handmade Belgium Truffles for us to sample. What better combination than chocolate and piano? You will notice on my piano that I have a candy dish...my students do!

Lots of Rainbow Sheep Around Town...

Not only is there a new herd of sheep in town, but there is a duck, a mouse and even an alien.

Everyone had a great time needle felting. Though the class was limited to 10, we just kept pulling up more chairs and pulling out more fiber and pulling in more kids! Everyone had a relaxing, fun time.

Prior to this class, I heard from Kim Chatel, the author of this adorable book, and she was enthusiastic about our class. I can't wait to tell her how much fun we had. Her book, Rainbow Sheep, is available in my store. The instructions for felting these sheep is included in the book and I have the felting fiber and needles available as well.

Our next felting class is Halloween Mask Making, on Saturday October 25th.

I thank all the students that came to the Rainbow Sheep class, and I trust they are taking good care of their herd!

Painting the Town!

"Downtown Duvall Library"

Saturday, October 16th, with hands holding paint brushes and heads full of ideas, the citizens of Duvall "painted their town"!

The city sidewalks are scheduled to be torn up due to the Old Town Duvall Renovation Project, where beautiful curbs, planters, lighting, seating will replace the current scenic venue.

When we signed up, we were asked what our favorite place in Duvall is. That was easy! Besides the Foothills Academy, of course, we chose our 2nd home-away-from-home...the Duvall Library.

My girls and I each took a square and away we went.

Not being a painter, nor good with pen and ink, I chose my preferred form of artistic expression...music. I acquired the ability to draw a musical staff, having lived and breathed with one every day since the age of 4.

The weather was hot; in the 90's with a gentle breeze. Could not have asked for a better day. The paint dried quickly, and footprints were left only where they were intended.
I hope my little bit of "art" will inspire others to think of music as an important art form. It has always been for me!

Time for Fall Registration...

Although the leaves have yet to turn their colors towards fall, I am already turning my attention towards the fall teaching and events calendar.

This year I will be teaching Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school, and Monday through Thursday during the mornings. Friday and Weekends are reserved for special events, classes and performances.

So, as the leaves are still green and the flowers still glorious, if there are plans for piano music to fill your fall days and winter evenings, now is the time to turn towards scheduling.

"My husband 'playing at playing' the piano"

First Class a Success and Fun!!!!!

We had a beautiful sunny day, and equally beautiful children...30 in all...that excitedly watched as their fluffs of wooly fuzz shrunk around their soap as they gently rubbed it in their hands.

Many of the children wanted to know why their hands were so soft despite using soap. I told them it was because of the soap that their hands were so soft...homemade soap is not like grocery store soap.

We talked about why some silk is beautifully white and smooth while other silk is tan and nubby, but all comes from the same type of silk worm...I explained it was the difference between eating McDonald's food or mom's good natural homecooking!

This is going to be a class this I will be offering on a continual basis...it is easy, fun and everyone of all ages gets to see how a stinky, dirty fleece becomes so beautiful!

I have 35 years experience as a professional classical, jazz, blues and improvisational pianist/organist, with a background in solo performance, ensemble play/accompanying/composing/song writing-arranging and recording- studio musician work. I have taught music and piano in private school - Bellevue Christian - and currently in Northshore and Everett School Districts as pianist and orchestra string specialist.

I actively perform with the Sammamish Symphony as their pianist/keyboardist, which affords me the opportunity to bring students to the rehearsals where they get to experience the hard work and dedication that musicians bring to a performance.

I teach piano, voice, violin, cello and guitar - I was very blessed as a child, to have parents that provided me such a wonderful musical education, and now with my own academy I can share this with others.

I grew up in a musical family and there isn't a time I remember when I wasn't playing the piano. My great-grandmother's brothers even had a band during the depression, so it was inevitable that I, too, would play in a band. Currently I am lead pianist for the Timberjazz Hepcats Jazz Band. I also accompany school choirs and soloists, which is an entirely different playing skill.

Piano Lesson Fees and Policies

Tuition Fees:

Lesson Fees: $30 per 30-minute private lesson

Subsequent materials will be added to the monthly tuition when they are needed.

Payment is due at the first lesson of each month.

Attendance and Make-ups:

Students may begin lessons at any time! Whenever the spark of interest begins!

Unfortunately there can be no tuition deduction or reimbursement for missed lessons. If a student plans to discontinue lessons, a 30-day advance notification is requested.

Make-up lessons are limited to absences due to illness or notification in advance of a conflict.

The best attempt will be made to provide a make-up, but there is no guarantee. Make-up lessons will be given at our mutual convenience. Please notify the Academy by phone at least 3 hours prior to your scheduled lesson time, if you are ill. In the event that the Academy must cancel a scheduled lesson, a make-up or refund will be provided.

Recitals:

Goals set and achieved are important in building self-confidence. Listening and encouraging peers is an integral part of music appreciation, as well as recognition of hard work and a job well-done. To achieve this, Foothills Academy holds a Christmas/Holiday recital.

For Parents:

Artistry in music takes many years to develop. Be patient if your student is in a slump! Keep in mind the big picture. Our role is to observe and encourage music as it finds its way into your student's life.

After lots of painting, and a week in Alaska of relaxing, I am now open to start playing!

I have given my first Foothills Academy piano lesson this week. The comment from my student of 5 years was..."this piano is hard to play!". I smiled for that strengthens my teaching philosophy that students should not be taught/practice and play on just one instrument. Sarah is used to having lessons in her home, and she now realizes not all pianos are created equal. She will be building up her finger strength in no time, since the Foothills Academy piano is a strong/percussive Kawai requiring the pianist to control it.

The Little Engine That Could...

We're getting closer and are feeling a bit like the "Little Engine that Could".

Those wonderful 12 foot ceilings which make the acoustics soar, put painting in the pits.

The primer is finished, and now the colors are going up. Soon the piano will be brought in...my fibers and tools put on racks...sewing machine nestled in its corner...and my eagerness to get to work will all come together!

By June 1 I expect to have everything ready and start teaching right after 4th of July.

Academy out for spring cleaning break...

Recently I moved into a wonderful building in downtown Duvall on main street, right at the end of the Woodinville-Duvall Road. Next to a toy store, an antique mall and a purse and linen shop...how nice for all those moms waiting during a lesson?

As it is not yet what I have envisioned for the academy, we have been busy painting, hanging, moving, etc. as the space evolves into a warm and inviting teaching and creating environment.

Alongside piano and textile instruction, I am creating an environment for my creativity, design and fabrication of my textile art. Thus, I am busily getting everything ready to bring in my 5'8" Kawai grand piano, for my textile and musical creativity are hand-in-glove...

I'll keep you posted as we progress. I am looking to open by June 1.

Welcome,

My teaching philosophy is a simple one...to create a nurturing friendship between the student and their piano that will endure a lifetime!

I know that each student asks something different of me, just as we all have independent goals.

Some want to play Chopin Nocturne's flawlessly, others to play the latest "pop" song in a band, and still others desire to accompany their children's singing or their brothers' trumpet.

There is even the student who is only there because "mom said so", and that is alright, for they will one day thank mom for "saying so" when they choose to pick up another instrument one day and find they already know how to read music!

I do not teach in private homes, for another simple reason...it is similar to practicing soccer in the backyard and having play-off/championship games in the same backyard. For me, some of the most warm and exhilarating times as a student was playing on my teachers' various pianos. How "talented" I felt as my simple beginning piano piece would vibrate from beautiful, well-crafted instruments...of course, the black grand pianos were my favorite...therefore I have my personal Kawai grand piano in the academy so that all my students can feel that same exhilaration!
